Reiki Definition – What Is Reiki?
The principle behind Reiki is one that a therapist can channel energy to a person by touching them (and not touching them, called untouch). By this principle, universal life force energy flows through us and causes us to be alive and by channeling it to someone who is not emotionally and physically well, they gain healing and restoration. This life force flows through our chakras, meridians, and nadis.
In Usui/Tibetan Reiki, Reiki healers have to open the energetic channels and to remove the blocks through harmonization. The healers receive the energy to heal them and connect to the source of the universal energy or life force, also called Universal Ki or Rei. (Also called aura, god-conciousness, etc.)
Reiki Training History And Overview
Reiki is a stress reduction and relaxation technique that promotes healing. The technique traces its roots back to Japan. Reiki was created in 1922 but Japanese Buddhist, Dr. Mikao Usui. Many people choose to learn reiki to heal their own pain but also those of loved ones, or even start their own practice.
Reiki is spiritual, but Reiki is not a religion; neither is connected to religion. It uses the source of life to heal. It is an entity and as a concept is even older than religious philosophy. There is nothing you need to “believe in” when practicing Reiki. Every living thing has Ki inside. Who or what receives a harmonization or attunement is in direct contact with its illuminated source.
There are 3 levels to Reiki mastery (sometimes 4). These levels are part of the attunement process. We will go more into attunement later in this post.
How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki works through channeling energy through energy highways in the body; highways that control specific organs, glands and areas of the nervous system. As the Reiki energy moves through the body, the body falls into deep relaxation and consequently results in natural and powerful healing.
Some people feel absolutely nothing besides the tactile hand-to-body touch. Luckily, whether you feel it working or not, reiki is working. It is more noticeable to those who are more in tune with their bodies.
Who Can Perform Reiki Treatment and Healing?
“According to the American Hospital Association, in 2007, 15% or over 800 American hospitals offered Reiki as part of hospital services.” (Source: Island Reiki Training) You can expect a reiki therapy session to be performed by anyone who is trained or certified. This can be a health professional, administered therapist, psychic, or even a close family or friend.
Reiki treatment does not have to be done in a doctor’s office, it can be done from the comfort of your own home. The space should be quite, serene, and free of distractions. Some Reiki healers are powerful enough that they don't even have to be in the same location as their student.
What Does Reiki Treatment Do?
Reiki is known to heal all types of mental and physical ailments. It has been proven to have a positive effect on anything from the common cold to anxiety/depression, to even terminal illness such as cancer. (It is important to note that this does not mean you stop using modern medical treatments if those are working).
How does Reiki Treatment feel? A Reiki session and treatment feel different depending on the person. One commonalty between almost all sessions is a deep form of pure relaxation.
Side effects of a reiki treatment can involve your body flushing and ridding itself of toxins. This is part of the cleansing process. You may experience symptoms such as upset stomach, headaches, or irritable bowel movements. These should only last for a day or 2 after treatment.
What To Expect With A Reiki Treatment Session
The benefits of learning and practicing Reiki are immense. It helps with enhanced immune systems, greater peace, deep relaxation, restful sleep, increased self awareness and an improved quality of life. Reiki healing does not discriminate; anyone ranging from the elderly, young, to pregnant and lactating mothers can benefit from this treatment. You can recieve this treatment for another or with proper training perform this treatment on yourself or others.
The reiki healing procedure is simple and natural. Here is a youtube video showing an example of a reiki session:
Reiki sensation experiences include: vibrational buzzing, coolness or heat, tingling (pins and needles feeling), sleepiness, deep relaxation, itchiness, numbness, electrical sparks
Reiki Session Cost – How much does a reiki session cost? According to reiki.org, it can cost anywhere from $25 to $100 dollars for one Reiki session. These prices are dependant on the length of session, level of mastery, number of patients, and other factors.
Massage and Reiki Session
Reiki therapy and massage therapy have recently become a complementary practice. To be a massage therapist, you need state accredited certifications, whereas Reiki certifications are not currently government regulated. Many massage therapy schools have begun introducing Reiki healing as it works so well with massage therapy.
You may also see some massage or reiki trainers incorporate ‘laying of the stones’ using chakra crystal gems for balancing. While Reiki may not be accredited by government, there are other forms of accreditation that are highly reputable within the alternative health and healing industry such as Karuna or Seichem.
Yoga and Reiki Session
Just as yoga can be used along side of Chakras (or Chakras inline with Reiki), Yoga and Reiki combined can be an extremely powerful healing combination. As Christie Pitko (yoga teacher, reiki master teacher) explains in this blog post from doyouyoga.com, Yoga peels open many layers of yourself. During these transitions, reiki can be used to help heal these areas of the body, mind, and spirit.
Hatha Yoga techniques are specifically apparent in Reiki teachings. There are basic poses that combine breathing and physical postures to help heal your chakras. When you combine Yoga with Reiki, its energy flow increases substantially. Yoga brings a deeper understanding to Reiki, and Reiki brings a deeper understanding to Yoga.

The 5 Reiki Principles and Ethics
There are 5 reiki principles to live by. They are:
- Just for today, I will not worry.
- Just for today, I will not be angry.
- Just for today, I will be grateful. (Live the attitude of gratitude)
- Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
- Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing. (I will shone love and respect to all)
These are great reminders and mantras for anyone to live by, not just those that practice or use Reiki.
Interested In Becoming A Healer? Learn Reiki For Beginners
Anyone has the opportunity to learn Reiki, without having to go through a ridiculous amount of courses and spend an absurd amount of money. There are so many sources of information both online and offline. These sources will give you an idea and the basics of Reiki but one cannot be a Reiki channel just by accessing these sources of information. To be a healer/channel, one needs to be attuned by a Reiki master.
The cost to become a Reiki Master training can be expensive. One beginner class can cost at least $250. A secondary class is upwards of $375, and a Master certification is up to $885. (Taken from Reiki Partners Maine) Students often pay too much for healing training without the proper process or research. There are many myths about reiki such as you have to travel to Japan to learn the secrets. Many of the traditional methods of reiki training have been lost over time because people want to overcharge for their practice.
What Does It Mean To Reach Attunement in Reiki?
Reiki attunement is the process in which a person’s chakras are opened up so that they become a healer. As a beginner, the best way is to contact a local Reiki teacher and learn from them. In some cases one can find a ‘distant master’. This is sometimes discouraged because of credibility reasons and the fact that one will miss out on face-to-face discussions that solidify the concept.
When someone becomes a healer, the first time he or she feels the energy flowing through his or her hands. When this moment happens, after receiving the attunement the entity becomes Reiki. There is not anything new, but the new situation opens and puts in order what was already present in him or her.
This concept is well known and mentioned in all the human cultures, and this energy has different names according to each of these cultures. For example in India it is called Prana, and because of this name, we today talk about prana healing. Chinese call it Chi and for this reason today we know about Chi Kung, an ancient healing discipline.
Beginner’s Preparation Guide For Reiki Attunement – Becoming A Master Healer
Once you have made the decision to take up attunement and become a reiki healer, you will need to prepare so as to achieve maximum results. Purification is highly recommended at this stage; it will allow for the attunement energies to work more sufficiently through you. Take the following steps to achieve purification.
· Refrain from eating fish and meat for a few days (3 days or so) prior to the attunement. This is because these foods penicillin, toxins and elements that may make your system sluggish and throw you off balance.
· Take a lot of water and juices only for one to three days before the attunement. You could opt to stick to a purely-vegetarian diet. However, it is recommended you do this with medical advice.
· Reduce or better yet stop taking coffee or any caffeine drinks. Caffeine creates imbalances in the nervous systems.
· Refrain from alcoholic drinks for at least three days before attunement.
· Cut back on cigarettes, if you smoke
· Cut back on sweets, cakes and chocolates
· Reduce or completely stop watching TV, reading newspapers, surfing the web and listening to radio.
· Exercise your body and take long quiet walks in a natural environment.
· Start meditating for at least an hour a day. You could do this using any style you know or incase you don’t, spend some time in silence.
The Are 3 Reiki Training Levels For Attunement
An attunement includes lessons on what Reiki is, the history, the different levels and practical demonstrations. Reiki attunement is taught differently than most healing techniques. It is a spiritually powerful experience guided by the Rei. It is passed down from the reiki master to the student.
There is more than one level to attune. There are three levels or degrees in Reiki that you can achieve after attunement.
i. LEVEL ONE REIKI TRAINING – The first level or degree is called Proximity Modality Healing. At this level, the attuned healer has to be physically next to a person for them to be able to heal them. With the first level, the living entity becomes a channel that drives the energy. When the first attunement is received, in the future the entity has to put its hands on its or other entities body to connect to the Universal Ki. The energy will flow automatically.
ii. LEVEL TWO REIKI TRAINING – The second degree is more advanced. In this case, a healer can heal despite time and space. In essence, time and space do not limit Reiki so at this level, a healer is able to send Reiki to the future like in the case of an examination or interview or to the past to handle past hurtful events. In terms of space, a healer can send reiki to any part of the world.
iii. LEVEL THREE REIKI TRAINING – The third and most advanced level is divided into three: Master Healer, Master or Teacher and Grand Master. A Master is the healer who has reached the highest levels of Reiki healing; a Reiki Master/Teacher can teach levels 1 and 2 and the Grand Master is the ultimate level of Reiki knowledge or healing.
POST ATTUNEMENT / CERTIFIED REIKI HEALER – Once one reaches attunement, it is important to go through a 21 day cleanse. This cleanse is so crucial to the self-healing process.
Reiki Symbols And Their Meanings During Training
During one of the attunment time periods of the three levels of Reiki, the master stands behind the student and draw the Reiki symbols. Then he moves in front of the student and again behind repeating the process. Those receiving attunements can realize different feelings. Someone can see colors or images; someone else can see past existences. Some are covered by light or feel a sensation of peace or love or wonder. Everyone feels something but the levels can be different from individual to individual. Usui symbols are scared and only meant to be discovered by a Level 2 or 3 Reiki master.
One might wonder why Reiki masters would want to keep these symbols a secret from the rest of society and what they mean. So what are the closely guarded Reiki symbols and what do they mean? Several generations ago it would be next to impossible for one to know the answer to this question unless they themselves were a Reiki practitioner of the third degree.
Now, the answer to this question is easily obtained by reading books on Reiki or simply by searching the internet. These symbols which were once shrouded in mystery have been revealed to the world for a Reiki practitioner of any level to use.
There are three Reiki symbols that are used by Master practitioners. The Choku Rei, the Sei He Ki and the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen are the traditional names for each of these special Reiki symbols.
Choku Rei (Reiki Power symbol)
The Choku Rei simply means “Place the power of the universe here”. This Reiki symbol is frequently utilized to assist a Reiki practitioner in focusing their energy for a specific purpose. If a Reiki master visualizes or draws the symbol of Choku Rei temporarily increases the power of the practitioners capacity for healing.
Choku Rei can also be utilized to increase the power of any of the other Reiki symbols as long as it has been put into use prior to calling on the powers of the other symbols. In addition to these uses the Choku Rei symbol is often called upon for its protective capability. Simply visualize this symbol and direct its energy towards a particular person or group of people and they will be protected.
Sei He Ki (Mental or Emotional symbol)
The Sei He Ki symbol is one that is used to help align the body and the mind. Many ailments and other health issues stem from psychological problems. This symbol is most often translated as the phrase “God and man become one”.
Sei He Ki is the symbol that is most widely brought into use when one is healing someone who is suffering from an addiction such as those suffering from alcohol or substance abuse problem. This is because the sei he ki brings together the brain and the body. This symbol can also be used when one has lost something important and it needs to be found. If a reiki masted visualizes or draws this symbol the item can be easily found.
Hon Sha Ze Sho (Distance Healing symbol)
Its meaning in English is “No past, no present, no future” or it can have the meaning of “The Buddha in me contacts the Buddha in you.” This symbol is primarily used to for distance healing in which a Reiki master will focus their positive healing energies towards a person so that they may be healed of all of their ailments. The person does not have to be near the practitioner during this time.
A Reiki master can simply first visualize this symbol and then begin to concentrate their energy towards the afflicted person. If you become a reiki trainer, this means you can use the distance symbol to send healing energy to your spouse at work, children at school, to your coworkers, etc.
Dai Ko Myo (Master symbol)
The Dai Ko Myo symbol should only be used by those who have reached the master degree of reiki training. Since it is the master symbol, is is considered to be the most powerful and have the highest vibration. It is the symbol that heals our subconscious, which is found in the crown chakra. It illuminates our true self.
Raku (“Fire Serpent”, Final Attunement symbol)
This is the final symbol learned in traditional usui reiki. This symbolizes that attunement is complete and the energy becomes sealed into the 7 Chakras. It is used to ground the receiver and practitioner. It is also used during sessions of reiki healing.
The Raku symbol is believed to symbolize lighting from the sky as the life force chi, and runs down the spine through our chakras. It is only to be used by those properly trained because it can direct negative energy out of the body. But, if not done by a trained professional can have negative effects.
These are just the main Reiki symbols, although there are others as well depending on your reiki practice.
WARNING ABOUT USING REIKI SYMBOLS: Masters in this field believe that the symbols not to be used by those who are not advanced practitioners as they are not effective if used by those who do not have their advanced knowledge. Reiki masters of healing have ascertained that the usage of these precious Reiki symbols is best left to the masters of healing as those who are inexperienced cannot and will not be able to harness their awesome powers as they may create more harm than good.
Reiki Training And Healing In A Nutshell
The action to put your hands on yours or other people's or animals' body to heal is in our nature. When we feel pain, the first thing we do is to bring our hands where we have pain. When we have the fever, we put our hands on our forehead to reduce suffer. The touch brings heat, serenity, and healing. Animals do almost the same when they leak a wounded part of their body. In the animal world, a mother leaks her kids when they are sick and human beings touch their babies with their hands. The human or animal body irradiates heat and energy, which is the vital force.
